How It Works:

The bird we will be carving in this program  is the Lesser Scaup drake.  As a diver, it has the simplicity of form and yet basic characteristics that make it a good subject for the novice and intermediate carver to use in this class. The carving of this bird will be covered from start to finish in 40 steps, presented , with texted images, demos and, comprehensive video files. (A high speed connection is best for viewing online videos.)  You will learn a complete methodology you can use to improve your carving skills now and in the future.

How to adapt or make a pattern to a desired pose will be taught, but creating a pattern for the project is optional.  You will be able to purchase both a copy of the pattern and the tupelo wood cutout from that pattern if you choose to enroll with that option. You can also order these cutouts or wood through the online store under the Wood category in the main menu of  Wildfowl Art Shop and Gallery.
A listing of all of basic supplies you will need is under this link Supplies .

Option 1 - A one time fee of  $145.00 upon acceptance of your  Application.
This includes full access to the program plus the easy start package which ncludes the tupelo cutout blank, a study bill, a  refernece photo pack of 10 views of the bird , the cutout pattern and a published reference pattern by Pat Godin.

This includes full access to the program, the the cutout pattern and a published reference pattern by Pat Godin. This option allows the student to make their own cutout and procure the other needed items separately as needed.

Either option gives you full access to all of the instructional steps and video instruction for carving the Lesser Scaup drake.  The instruction will be retained on the website indefinitely for your continued use.  Due to time restraints  I will not be guiding each student, move by move, or image by image via email.  I will be available for email if you get into serious trouble and you can email me images of your difficulty. Images of your progress is requested at many critical points in the program.

Ongoing revisions on the steps enhance the imagery of  complex aspects and creates a stand-alone program that you can work independently.  New techniques may be included in these revisions. I have included drills that will help you with common weak points. These can help you with other projects.  If you follow the steps in sequencestudy the videos and do not rush the program, you can make this learning experience extremely worthwhile and useful for present and future bird carving projects.

The class bird offered is one of the best species with which to learn the basics of waterfowl carving.  Inevitably the beginning carver will pick the most complex and beautiful species as their first bird.  This is often a mistake and not recommended.  Important basics are usually overlooked by trying to carve a bird too advanced for one's skills.  Discouragement is often the end result of such attempts. This carving  project should be considered a lab manual type learning exercise.  The student may already have those fancy poses or other related projects going on;  hopefully, he or she will be able to apply this knowledge to them.

Here is a short Preview just using small images to give you some idea of what is covered in the program. All the images and videos in the class itself will be enlargeable for easier study.

When you apply you will be asked to accept a Waiver of Risk Agreement.
Sending the application indicates your acceptance of and agreement with it. The Application form also has some profile questions that will help me to assist you. Please answer those and submit that  for approval BEFORE payment.

All of these activities, plus what I can offer you, supplementally, from my files and main website will work together to give you a first of its kind, first quality, online wildfowl carving instruction program.  This is the way it works and I promise to be working hard to make this program work and stay current to assist you in your wildfowl carving pursuits

Sincerely,
Vic Kirkman
